Kim McCloy's Baby Boy is Here

8 lbs, 14.6 ounces, 20 inches

We decided to be induced on March 7^th, 4 days before his due date, mainly so we knew that we would have family here to help out. I was admitted at 7:30 am, and around 8:15 am, the induction was started. I was already dilated to a 4 when I got to the hospital, and the doctor told me that if I hadn’t been induced, I most likely would have been coming in that night on my own anyways, so he was ready to come on that date. We decided to go for the epidural right away because of the fact that I was already a 4 and we didn’t want to have to wait for the anesthesiologist. Labor was pretty simple, Derek and I were actually getting bored and played Who Wants To Be a Millionaire on his i-phone right up until delivery. My total labor and delivery time was 5 hours.  At 1 pm, I was checked and ready to go, and at 1:15 pm, Camden Paul McCloy joined our family. He was a big baby, weighing in at 8 lbs 14.6 ounces, and 20 inches long. He has been a very good baby, he really transitioned to sleeping at night pretty fast, and hardly ever cries. London has taken a little bit of time adjusting to sharing the attention, but she is getting better, and loves to help out with her baby brother. We love having one of each and know that we are very blessed for our beautiful children. I want to thank everyone for all of their support and love (and meals) that have been provided. We have such a wonderful ward!

 

Cacti Seminar

On  Tuesday, March 8, Quail Creek will host a repeat of a seminar held by the Green Valley Gardeners concerning growing and caring for cacti in Southern Arizona.  The turnout for this seminar was overwhelming, exceeding the capacity of the room, and many, many people were turned away at the door. The Master Gardeners are getting many calls about ailing plants at the Cooperative Extension as well. Obviously people in our area are concerned about their cacti and succulents after the freeze.

After experiencing three nights of the worst freeze in Tucson in 30 years, many folks are looking at dead or dying cacti.  The speaker, Mark Sitter, owner of B and B Cactus Farm in Tucson, will introduce you to 10 species of hardy cacti that fared well after the recent freeze.  Mark will have living examples of each species and will talk about their merit.

He will discuss how to choose species appropriate to our area and will provide tips on planting, maintaining and feeding your cactus.  He will cover proper watering and control of insect pests particular to cacti.  With the recent cold spell, Mark will also discuss how to move forward, pruning and removing dead or damaged plants.

Mark has an extensive background in growing and caring for cacti.  He worked 10 years at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum as a horticulturist caring for the Cactus and Succulent Garden as well as the Ironwood Restaurant and Gallery.  He was involved with many of the museum's designs and installations of cactus and succulents.  Today he oversees a large and diverse collection of cactus and succulents from around the world growing at B and B Cactus Farm,  1.5 miles east of Houghton Rd on the east Speedway Blvd. in Tucson.

The seminar will be presented in the ballroom at the Madera Clubhouse.  Doors open at 9.  The seminar will begin at 9:30 and last approximately 1 hour, with plenty of time left over to ask questions.  The seminar is being co-hosted by Quail Creek with the Green Valley Gardeners as a public service and is free and open to the public.

Annalise Geniel Castillo

Born January 21, 2011 at 2:58 pm...while I was watching The Nate Berkus Show. Luckily, I was on an epidural so I didn't know that she was basically ready to come while I watched my design show. I was induced at 8 that morning and got my drugs after a few painful contractions. (I LOVE modern medicine!) The nurse checked me at 2:50 and 8 minutes later Annalise was born. Super easy and uncomplicated delivery. She weighed 7 pounds and 9 ounces (almost a full pound more than Nora) and 20 inches (an inch taller than Nora, too). She has been a really sweet baby so far. I had forgotten how much little newborns squawk and make sounds like sighs. She's so precious to us and Nora seems rather taken also. She keeps running up to her and saying "baby!" and then "ANNA!". She yells her name everytime, but we're happy Nora can say that since she is only 18 months. People keep asking where I got the name, so I thought I'd share it here. I found the name is the book The Hidding Place that I borrowed from Kim Young...(or was it Brita's?) and I fell in love with it. I liked it because it was an combination of my sister Dianna's name and Todd's sister Alicia's name. Geniel is Todd's grandma's name. I hope my little Annalise will have all the amazing qualities of these outstanding and strong women.

Notes from our Budgeting Activity

Are you spending money on things you REALLY want or substituting for unsatisfying cheaper alternatives?


We brainstormed Benefits of Budgeting: Teaches kids to use money wisely. Makes you available to serve. Enjoyment of saved for recreation.   Sleep at night. etc.

Liquid savings should be for at least 3 months for household. Go to provident living calculator online to find out how long until you get 3 month reserve & pay off debt.


Budgeting is between spouses, AND children. Children need to learn to make sacrifices and be careful with money. Must pass on your knowledge for the next generation.


Make sure both spouses know how to do banking, bills, taxes investments, 401k etc. - do it together twice a year.


The 10 Principals from the book "For Love & Money":
1- Financial problems are usually behavioral problems.
2- If you continue doing what you've been doing, you'll get continue getting what you've gotten.
3- Nothing is worth sacrificing relationship for.
4- money spent on things you value usually leads to a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment.  Money spent on things you don't value usually leads to a feeling of frustration and futility.
