Money Saving Tip: Use sales flyers and shop for the best bargains. You can plan your menus around the bargains, or use your shopping list. Always use coupons. Shop loss-leaders. These are the items the store loses money on but they draw customers. They are usually placed on the ends of the aisles. Again, you can plan your weekly menu around these items.

Utah Fruit

There has been a change in the availability andorder/delivery date for the second round of fruit.

** The next order of fruit will be delivered on Monday, Sept. 27th. (I will email out when it gets here.)

** I need orders and money in by Friday, Sept. 24th at 9:30 a.m. Orders submitted later than that may not get filled this go round. 

With the last order I had increased the growers price by $1 a box to get the fruit from my friend in Queen Creek here to Tucson.  There was also freight charge per box that we didn't realize the grower charged us until after you all paid for and picked up your fruit.  From now on they will be charging freight.  The cost of that has been added into the price of the fruit, so you will see that reflected in the price of the fruit this time.  If you already paid for this second round of fruit, I will need to collect the difference from you – you can just bring it when you pick up your fruit.  Sorry!

If you haven't heard back from me that I got your order for this round, then I don't have your order.  To order please email me at trish@markerman.com or call 520-722-2299.  I will be sending out an email with directions to my house and other info. as it gets closer to the delivery date. 

If you would like to order a 1/2 box instead of a full box of something, try splitting with a friend or let me know and I might be able to work that out for you – although there are no guarantees.

Red Bartletts are sweeter than the regular Bartlett and are wonderful for canning.  These are my favorite pear--such great flavor!

These are a large, beautiful peach and are by far, the yummiest variety.  They are very sweet and juicy.  The grower stated they had a great crop of these this year.  Make sure you get some!!!

Money Saving Tip: To avoid duplicate purchases, do an inventory before you shop. Start with the fridge, kitchen cabinets and pantry. Then check the laundry room, bathroom, and other storage areas. Itemize what you need to buy in categories, ordered the way the store does it: baking, beverages, dairy, fresh produce, health and beauty aids, etc. Make sure you have store flyers handy when you write your list so you can take note of the best deals that week. Jot down the size and price of sale items to avoid picking up the wrong one.

Homemade Fruit Leather

Making your own fruit roll ups is easier than you would think. "Fruit Roll-Ups" is actually a
commercial name for a disappearing practice of food preservation called fruit leather. You might
ask, if I can save time and energy by buying them ready made in the store why bother? The
answer is that most fruit leathers that you buy in the store are more candy than anything else and
have very little nutritional value. You can change that by making your own. It's a great activity for
using with a study on pioneering or nutrition, a way to avoid the junk food habit, or a simple trail
snack for your nature hikes... or maybe your just looking for a way to use up that over ripe fruit.

Order BULK Utah Fruit

The following is the info sent from Trish in Tucson who will take bulk orders from any of you interested in canning or sharing, etc.  This is the info she sent:  (If you order with & pay her, we will bring down the orders to Sahuarita!)

"I spoke with my fruit contact today (in Utah) and due to a cold, late spring they are about two weeks behind schedule. They say that it's looking like fruit won't be ripe until mid-September. They will let me know as soon as they have a definite delivery date when it gets closer to ripening times. They solidified prices.  Those prices and the fruit availability are listed below.

There will be several orders this year, this being the first, so if you miss this one maybe the next one will work better for you. Later in the year we will have peaches again, pears, and lots of apples: red & gold delicious, fuji, granny smith, braeburn, gala, gonagold and jons.

Last year they offered the cherries with or without sugar already mixed in. If you get them without the sugar, you obviously get more fruit but would then have to add your own sugar for pie filling or whatever. Please specify how you want them if you order cherries.
